FAQs

What is a pool salt chlorinator?

A pool salt chlorinator (also known as a saltwater chlorinator) is a device that automatically generates chlorine by converting dissolved salt (NaCl) in your pool water into chlorine gas through electrolysis. This keeps the pool sanitized without adding chlorine manually.

  • You add pool-grade salt to the water.
  • The chlorinator cell uses electricity to convert the salt into hypochlorous acid (active chlorine).
  • This chlorine sanitizes the water and then reverts back to salt, repeating the cycle.

Typically 3–7 years, depending on usage, maintenance, and water quality. Regular cleaning and correct water chemistry can extend the lifespan.

  • Inspect and clean the salt cell every 2–3 months
  • Test salt and chlorine levels regularly
  • Check the control panel for alerts or maintenance reminders
  • Monitor pH levels, as salt systems may cause pH to rise over time

Most systems operate best at 2,500–3,500 ppm (parts per million) of salt. This is about 1/10 the salinity of seawater, so it's very gentle.
